We caught up with Captain Alex Pieterson as she was about to embark on what would hopefully be another successful salvage mission:

“We’ll salvage from anything – luxury passenger liner to deep-space mining rig, if there’s anything of value on board we’re going to find it. By the time we get there, the crew are long gone. Sucked into space, ripped apart by Crawlers, starved to death – ships don’t get lost in the Outerzone unless something’s gone seriously wrong.

The one thing every RISC commander waits for is the new manifest. The list of wrecks that are available for salvage. We look at the potential worth of the salvage, the price on the black box, and how much local colour we’re likely to run into and we make our choice. There’s never an easy wreck – by the time it’s on the manifest there’s ALWAYS something creeping through those corridors, otherwise they wouldn’t call us.

And then it’s first-come, first-served. There is a code of conduct that says RISC teams will not enter armed conflict with one another; the Rule of First Boarding is in place to ensure that this doesn’t happen. But all the way out here... who’s really going to know?”
